Dubai is a city of extremes but what surprised me most wasn’t the luxury. It was the balance. Chaos and calm. Tradition and innovation. Stillness and spectacle. Dubai isn’t meant to be rushed, and it isn’t meant to be understood in a single visit but once you arrive, it has a way of pulling you in.
First Impressions: Chaos, Calm, and City Lights
I landed at Dubai International Airport (DXB) late in the evening, exhausted from a long haul flight and ready to get to the hotel. Customs was smooth and surprisingly efficient within minutes, I was through and heading toward my pre-arranged airport transfer.
Finding your driver at DXB can feel overwhelming at first. Most drivers stand in the same area holding placards, and it’s a lot to process when you’re jetlagged. The trick? Pause, scan, and make eye contact. Once your driver spots you, they step forward immediately and take over from there.
I booked my transfer through Wellcare Limo Dubai, and the moment I got into the car, the city revealed itself. My face was glued to the window towering skyscrapers glowing against the night sky, endless highways, and a sense that I was entering a place that doesn’t sleep.
The drive to Palm Jumeirah was so scenic I didn’t want it to end.
Where I Stayed: Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel
I checked into Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel, a wellness-focused beachfront hotel located on Palm Jumeirah.
Our Room
• Deluxe Room with Balcony
• Comfortable (not cloud-soft) beds
• Clean, modern, and quiet perfect after long days out
Hotel Highlights
• Exceptionally friendly and attentive staff
• Large pool with cabanas available for rent (pricey, but expected)
• Beachfront access (note: the sand gets very hot bring sandals and proper sunscreen)
• Taxis are always available right outside
I opted for the breakfast inclusive package, and it was absolutely worth it. The spread was massive international options, local flavors, fresh fruit, pastries, and made to order items. I intentionally tried something new each morning.
What I Did in Dubai (And What’s Worth It)
I booked a Sunset Shared Yacht Tour with Xclusive Yachts, and it ended up being one of the most relaxing experiences of the trip.
• Smooth check-in at the marina
• Comfortable lounge while waiting to board
• Calm, scenic cruise once underway
• Light barbecue served onboard
As the sun set, I passed Ain Dubai, admired the glowing skyline, and caught a distant view of the iconic Burj Al Arab before heading back to the marina under the city lights. This was peaceful, scenic, and perfectly paced.
The Ultimate Desert Experience (Red Dunes Safari)
If you want to experience the UAE beyond the city, this is non-negotiable. I was picked up from my hotel and driven just over an hour into the desert. Watching the city fade into open land was fascinating in itself. Once I arrived, my driver stopped, stepped out, and let air out of the tires. Then the real fun began.
What the experience Included:
• Red dunes dune bashing (exhilarating, intense but skip if you have motion sickness)
• ATV ride through the desert (about 20 minutes)
• Sandboarding (fun to try once, especially if you’ve never snowboarded)
• Camel ride (5 minutes long but memorable)
• BBQ dinner and live show with fellow travelers
The evening wrapped up with shared tables, great conversation, and an energetic performance. It was immersive, exciting, and incredibly well-organized. Highly Recommended

Aura Skypool: The World’s Highest 360° Infinity Pool
If you do one iconic Dubai experience, make it Aura Skypool. Located on the 50th floor of The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm, Aura is nothing short of breathtaking. I booked first row seating with a Palm view for the morning slot (10am–2pm) and I’m so glad I did.
What to Know:
• The pool wraps completely around the building
• If you’re in the pool, you can walk around to see every angle
• There truly are no bad views
• Light bites are available
• Book the moment your date opens; it sells out fast
• Guests under 15 are not allowed at any time
It took real effort to leave.
The Museum of the Future
The Museum of the Future was immersive, ambitious, and genuinely fun. Nearly every exhibit is hands-on and forward-thinking, exploring technology, sustainability, and the future of humanity. This is one attraction where the hype actually matches the experience.
Tip: Book directly on the official website in advance.
Old Dubai Walking Tour (Cultural Highlight)
This ended up being my favorite experience. I met my guide, Mohamed, and spent hours walking through Old Dubai learning about the history of the Emirates, daily life before modernization, and the roots of the city.
Highlights included:
• Traditional Arabic coffee tasting
• Exploring the Dubai Spice Souk
• Ending at the Dubai Gold Souk
It was hot, it involved a lot of walking, and it was 100% worth it. This tour was booked through Airbnb Experiences, though it’s no longer available. There are other very similar tours that can be booked through other tour operators.
Ski Dubai
Inside the Mall of the Emirates, you’ll find Ski Dubai, an indoor winter wonderland. You’re given full gear (jacket, pants, gloves, boots), and trust me you’ll need it. It’s freezing inside. I tried snowboarding lessons. Fun, memorable, and like sandboarding a one-time experience for me. Afterward, I grabbed food at Tribes Carnivore, where the oxtails were incredible.
What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Dubai
• You cannot see everything in one trip plan to return
• Dubai feels luxurious, but everyday costs (food, taxis) are more reasonable than expected
• Palm Jumeirah is beautiful but far from many attractions
• Dubai is just one of seven Emirates in the UAE
• You can easily add a side trip to Oman if you have time
Would I Recommend Dubai?
Without hesitation YES!
• Fun, dynamic, and eye-opening
• Exceptionally safe, even for solo travelers
• Cameras everywhere, excellent infrastructure, and respectful culture
Final Travel Tips
• Always respect local customs, beliefs, and values
• Download the app Careem for taxis and food delivery
• Desert ATV rides are within designated parks, safe but still thrilling
• If you want cooler weather, visit November through December (peak pricing)
• Dubai is hot, but manageable with proper planning
Dubai isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience that unfolds layer by layer. Whether you’re there for luxury, culture, adventure, or all three, it’s a city that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve returned home.
